alexander technique >>> PRACTITIONERS: greg ford
The Alexander Technique is a totally unique approach to learning how to change harmful postural habits.
Developed by the Australian actor Frederick Mathias Alexander almost a century ago, the technique has been successfully used for many decades by people for a myriad of reasons - back pain, neck tension, respiratory difficulties, repetitive and overuse injuries, performance improvement for musicians, actors and sports people.
Applying the Alexander Technique brings about improved balance and coordination, freer breathing and ever increasing ease in movement.
One of the beauties of Alexander Technique is that it can be applied to any activity at any
time. It doesn,t require any special equipment - just a desire and intent to improve the quality
of movement or stillness in any activity.
Who is it for?
Anyone interested in taking more responsibility for their health or wanting to improve their performance.
Most people have the idea that their lifestyles, their work stations, their postural habits contribute
to their pain and difficulties but most feel powerless to effectively change their situation.
The Alexander Technique provides a very practical and effective tool for changing habits successfully.
Human beings are designed to function at their best when the head is freely balanced on a lengthened
and widened torso and this, in a nutshell is what the Alexander Technique is about.
Alexander lessons
Although Alexander Technique lessons usually have
huge therapeutic benefit - students most often
report feeling much lighter and freer --often
longstanding pains and discomforts disappear -
the intention is to teach the student a much greater
awareness of themselves in activity and how they
can learn to have much more choice about the way
they use themselves in everyday and more
specialised activities.
The best way to learn the technique is to have a
series of lessons from a qualified teacher.
Alexander Teachers undertake a fulltime, three year
course at an internationally accredited school and
are highly trained to use observation, gentle manual
guidance with the hands and verbal instruction.
The student wears loose comfortable clothes.
Apart from working with the student in activity most
Alexander teachers do "table work"---the student lying
on the table in semi supine--- usually a very relaxing
experience which is effective in getting muscles
to release to their resting length.
